    Pretty easy, overall.

    Course Overview:

Chemistry 145 is required for Nursing students at Augustana. it is an intro to both Organic and Biochemistry and Dr. Strandjord does an excellent job at explaining concepts even if you do not have prior chemistry experience. The labs are extremely helpful and Sapling is used to test your knowledge. Even if you hate chemistry, you'll enjoy this class if you have Strandjord.

    Course highlights:

The classes were mostly just discussion of powerpoint slides, and the homework consisted of Sapling online exercises. However, I really enjoyed the labs.

    Hours per week:

    3-5 hours

    Advice for students:

All you really have to do is do the Sapling homework and attend lab in order to get a B in the class. If you want an A, memorize the powerpoint slides.

    This class was tough.

    Course Overview:

This course is very fun. Although, it is extremely challenging Dr. Strandjord makes chemistry fun even for non-chemistry members. It may be the basics but the entire class is mentally stimulating. The labs are also fun as well. Breaking down compounds and creating new ones, and conducting multiple tests to find the identity of unknown substances.

    Course highlights:

The highlights of this course were the labs. There were two labs in particular that were extremely fun. There were a few labs where we synthesized aspirin It was interesting to go through the different steps that your average chemists go through just to produce this pain killer. There was also another lab where students were able to pick from multiple different unknown substances. Then, through a series of tests, had to identify not just the substance but whether it was an alkane, alkyne, ketone, etc.

    Hours per week:

    3-5 hours

    Advice for students:

If you are to take this course be sure you take it seriously. Study the notes and pay attention in the lecture. And be sure to attend the lecture. Even though the professor posts the power points online there are some things that he will explain slowly and draw out. Also, be sure to pay attention when you receive feedback on lab reports be sure to listen to them because the professor knows what he wants and will take off points if you don't do it that way.
