    This class was tough.

    Course Overview:

Survey of the Recording Industry covers a very broad spectrum of information within the music industry, touching on revenue streams, live entertainment, unions and guilds, publishing, copyright, types of contracts, licenses, and more.

    Course highlights:

An assignment required us to contact an industry professional and interview them. This allowed me to choose a career I was interested in and acquire advice from professionals first hand. This assignment built connections and offered insight I could not have earned in a classroom setting. Sitting face to face with real life agents, songwriters, publishers, etc. will offer great advice to any music biz amateur.

    Hours per week:

    6-8 hours

    Advice for students:

Take this course, attend every class with listening ears, and find a study group! Networking is key in this game.

Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

Mr. O'Brien is one of the best professors I've had so far in my college career. His humor keeps you engaged in the class and he always tries to get student involved in the lecture as well as making connections to current music business news.

    Course highlights:

This course focuses on the core aspects of the recording industry including artist development, songwriting, publishing, record companies, record marketing and promotion, copyright, performance rights, and careers.

    Hours per week:

    6-8 hours

    Advice for students:

My best advice is to sit in the front row, ask questions, engage in discussions, read the recommended music business news sites, and read the textbook everyday
