    | Would highly recommend.

    This class was tough.

    Course Overview:

I would highly recommend this course because the professor is very organized and writes all his notes on the white board while he is lecturing. He also does review sessions for every exam including the final with summarized notes from all his lectures. He tells his students the style of his exam and the type of questions it will have. Furthermore, he is very helpful and approachable if the student has any questions before lecture, during it, after it, or even during his office hours. Moreover, although organic chemistry is a dense subject, he simplifies the mechanisms and reactions and requires only necessary reactions to be well known. Lastly, he gives partial points on his exams and grade them fairly even if the student did not write the full mechanism or did not answer the question fully.

    Course highlights:

I learned that a carbon never has more than four bonds and although that sounds so simple, when a student take the course, he will realize that he could make a mistake of giving carbon five bonds or three. Also I learned very well how to draw structures of organic compounds. I also learend that an alcohol gets oxidized to become a ketone and a ketone gets oxidized to become a carboxlic acid. Lastly, I learned that a hydrogen can never be removed from a hydroxyl group (-OH) because the oxygen is highly electoronegative.

    Hours per week:

    6-8 hours

    Advice for students:

I would recommend taking this course with easier courses because it requires a lot of memorization, understanding and comprehending fully the professor's notes with every detail. Also, for my first exam I did not do well because I only looked over his notes a week before the exam. However, for the second exam, after every lecture or two, I would look over his notes and understand every detail of it. I would also memorize and repeatedly practice doing the mechanisms with with his notes as my guide. He also assigns homework problems and does them in his recitations so I got the homework solution manual and used to do them on my free time since when he used to do them, I did not have a chance to look over his notes so the recitation were not useful to me. Finally, after the first exam, I started preparing for the second exam as well as the final and went over course material from the first exam and I dedicated all my time for this course. I highly recommend this course with this professor because I took Organic Chemistry 1 with another professor who lacked understanding of the material and focused on minor details that were unnecessary.
