    This class was tough.

    Course Overview:

I recommend this course for several different reasons. First, the instructor, Todd Casey, was an amazing help. He was able to push my skills further as an artist through the use of insightful, detailed and personalized feedback. Second, the content of each module was clear and easy to understand. The course also taught me how to look at my own designs, as well as the designs of other, with an analytical eye and a better understanding of design principles and color psychology. I really learned a tremendous amount through this course.

    Course highlights:

I was able to examine the principles of color and design through the use of digital and traditional media. The course also helped me identify and utilize a variety of color palettes to explore color harmony and contrast. Additionally, I also learned other topics pertaining to components of color, desaturation of color, color psychology, advancing/ receding color, simultaneous contrast, color proportion, the influence of light temperature on color, and design principles.

    Hours per week:

    9-11 hours

    Advice for students:

Make sure you have a decent amount of knowledge on Photoshop and/or Illustrator. Knowing either of these two programs before hand will make this class a lot more simple. I don't know either program well and I spent a good amount of time each week just figuring out how the tools work. I was able to make it through with just a basic knowledge of Photoshop. Be prepared for the final two assignments: Atmospheric Perspective and the Mandala. The digital coloring of the mandala was perhaps the most difficult for me. This course has a pretty heavy work load and the weekly reading for the modules is about 20 pages per module. There are also weekly quizzes, a mid-term exam and a final exam. There were also a few weeks were you'll need to complete an exercise and two assignments or two exercises and an assignment within a one week period. You don't want to fall behind in this class.

    This class was tough.

    Course Overview:

This is a great class that helps students get a solid foundation and understanding on how to properly use and mix color. After this class you won't have the need to "wing it" when making your color choices for a creation since you will have a strong understand of how colors work together to create a hierarchy and solid, complete piece.

    Course highlights:

For me personally, the highlight of the course was the final project - designing and creating my own Mandala. I love working with patterns and learning how to apply color in a way that creates depth and focus is an asset I will use for the entirety of my artistic professional life.

    Hours per week:

    6-8 hours

    Advice for students:

Do not under value or under estimate this class. Follow the instructions and really make an effort to understand. Show your professor that you're having fun too because this really is a fun class! The work may feel tedious at times but you have a lot of freedom to create whatever you want so run with it and have fun. Draw and design in your own style because this class offers the freedom to do so - you just have to make sure your colors are right!
