    This class was tough.

    Course Overview:

I would definitely recommend this course as it focuses on the many functional groups regarding their nomenclature, physical properties, reactions and mechanisms crucial for students pursuing a science degree. It focused heavily on mechanisms, synthesis and practical applications of the chemical reactions learned.

    Course highlights:

By taking this course, I was able to learn a lot about the various functional groups and their practical applications in the lab or in medicine. I learned various laboratory techniques such as distillation, and methods of synthesizing and identifying compounds. This course helped my critical thinking skills as each problem felt like a puzzle; for example, there were multiple ways of being able to produce a product in the synthetic chemistry portion of the course.

    Hours per week:

    9-11 hours

    Advice for students:

In order to succeed in the course, memorization and finding patterns is key. If you are able to see a pattern in the reactions and mechanisms, you will notice that many follow the same general pattern which will cut down on the amount of reactions you have to memorize. Also, watching videos online also helped a lot to understand how some reactions worked as there were plenty of explanation videos on YouTube.

Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

It is a course that you have to take if your major is chemistry or biology related, but the professor makes the class a fun and interesting. I won't say it is the easiest class, but it is one of my favorite classes I have taken at ARC.

    Course highlights:

The best part of the class were the OFF and aspirin labs because it shows that the things we learn in class can be used to make things we see everyday.

    Hours per week:

    0-2 hours

    Advice for students:

Do not forget what you learn in CHEM 420 because you will see it again, but it won't be explained.
