    This class was tough.

    Course Overview:

I highly recommend this class to students who really want to understand chemistry. Karen Pesis teaches the class very well but requires lots of work from her students.

    Course highlights:

I learned the fundamentals needed for further progression into the academic field of chemistry. This included knowledge of dimensional analysis (conversion between units), knowledge of the periodic table (including most element numbers and names, electron orbital patterns, periodic table trends, and electronegativity), balancing simple chemical equations (including learning the names of more than 50 polyatomic ions), essentials between the interactions of acids and bases (as well as the strongest acids and bases), and stoichiometry (conversions of information available through chemical reactions, including mass, volume, molarity, moles, and avogadro's number).

    Hours per week:

    9-11 hours

    Advice for students:

Personally, I mainly made sure to do all the homework and put significant thought into the post-lab questions and always review the questions provided on the study guide for exams. I highly recommend getting to know a few other students so that you can discuss the homework, quizzes, labs, and tests together to help you perform better in the class. A study group will really help you in this class.

    This class was tough.

    Course Overview:

This course was invaluable in helping me prepare for Chem 400. It has made me feel a lot more confident and given me a lot of tools to succeed at Chem 400. Would highly recommend it.

    Course highlights:

I gained an understanding of what is expected from a science major. I gain a lot about the fundamentals of Chemistry and it helped me realize how much you rely on nomenclature to do just about anything else.

    Hours per week:

    9-11 hours

    Advice for students:

Study your nomenclature ceaselessly, even after you think you've got it down. Don't let it slip. Also make sure you read ahead BEFORE lectures. It makes a huge difference.
