    | Would highly recommend.

Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

I would recommend this class to anyone who really likes music. It's not a class specifically for music majors, you don't actually need to have any musical background. It's a solid introduction to the roots and history of American popular music, and it's fascinating to hear the origins of some sounds and styles still used.

    Course highlights:

I learned about the three major sources, of American music, the European, African, and Latin "streams" that are the core elements of American music. The class traces the history of each from its arrival on our shores up through 21st century pop music through the descriptive (and not dry!) text as well as through downloadable and web-accessible audio and video examples of both well-known icons and huge influences with names you've never heard.

    Hours per week:

    9-11 hours

    Advice for students:

The listening component is a huge part of exams, so be sure to know the music, especially anything discussed in class, and not just the songs listed in the text.
