    This class was tough.

    Course Overview:

Knowing exactly 0 words of French going in, I emerged able to have simple conversations with my fluent boyfriend. The material is engaging, if sometimes ridiculous and outdated, and there is never a boring day in class. It is a lot of work, but well worth it.

    Course highlights:

My instructor was from France, so highlights included learning slang or curse words, a very interesting cultural divide moment where he couldn't understand why no one's grandmother called them "little lettuce" when they were a kid, and a "tattoo/tatou" joke that will never get old. We also learned how to talk about hangovers and about the slang "language" Verlan as cultural asides.

    Hours per week:

    6-8 hours

    Advice for students:

Set aside time to do the homework every night. EVERY night. There's something due every day, as well as study time to pass quizzes and exams. Pay attention to the quiz placement - my instructor had a quiz schedule that he never told us, but it was clear to anyone tracking when quizzes were. If your grades are suffering, don't try to be creative with paragraphs. Stick to the grammar and vocabulary you know well to get the most points.
