    This class was tough.

    Course Overview:

I would recommend this course to students interested in biology or chemistry and are prepared to work through this rigorous course. Chem 112A is the first semester of advanced organic chemistry at Berkeley. It is very difficult but very interesting to see how reactions taught in lecture actually occur in lab. Also the material is very applicable to biology as some of the problems we work though involve organic reactions with biological molecules and enzyme activity.

    Course highlights:

For me, the synthesis questions were the highlight of the course. We had to piece together multiple reactions in a row to get to a final product in puzzling synthesis problems. The geometric reasoning required in these problems was fascinating as stereochemistry is extremely important in this course.

    Hours per week:

    12+ hours

    Advice for students:

I would tell them to keep up witht he lecture material weekly and do not slack on any of the assignments as there are about 4-5 assignments due every week. The material continuosly builds off of itself, so falling behind is very detrimental to fully understanding the material.

Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

Super interesting but a huge time commitment

    Course highlights:

Learning how reactions will proceed and predicting products based on the reactants and reaction conditions was difficult but a good way to combine all concepts learned in one.

    Hours per week:

    9-11 hours

    Advice for students:

It's equivalent to 2 classes so schedule accordingly
