Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

I would only recommend this course if the student is taking this instructor. This instructor is one of the best I have ever had. I have learned a lot about the similarities in the Texas and Federal government and many differences. The instructor makes the learning fun and he goes at your pace. He helps you understand everything. I honestly thought the class would be tough and boring, but he made everything easy. I used to hate government in high school, but college made it interesting. I have become so well informed in this subject that it is unbelievably amazing. I enjoyed the class so much. Definitely take this class!

    Course highlights:

I have learned the different types of county and local government and the major types that make them up. For example, special districts, counties, and cities make up local government. I learned who makes laws (legislature), how they are implemented (bureaucracies, agencies, and boards), different types of veto's the governor has. The line-item veto is pretty cool, but it only applies to spending bills. The legislature deals with budget bills! I have learned many important court cases that have made an impact in Texas. For example, Roe v. Wade (abortion), Texas v. Johnson (freedom of speech), Ruiz v. Estelle (prison incarceration conditions), Plessy v. Ferguson (separate but equal), and Brown v. board (segregation is unconstitutional). I learned how many members represent the House and Senate and what the year terms are and requirements. I learned what the requirements to vote were. I learned stages of the policy making process (identification, formation, implementation, and evaluation); it rhymes so it stuck with me perfectly. I learned the different types of elections (general, primary, president delegate selections, local, and special). Texas does not have a personal income tax, but it does generate its' revenue through sales tax and property tax. I learned all of the amendments and types of federalism. There is dual, cooperative, new fed., federalism, and coercive. I would say the toughest information that I had to learn would either be legislative process or the plural executive (all of the elected executives and their functions, all of the appointed executives, and elected boards/commissions). This is only a few of the things I have learned too!

    Hours per week:

    6-8 hours

    Advice for students:

Just like any other class, you have to study! Make flashcards or a review. Study for a hour and take a small break then get back into it. It was really not that hard unless you apply yourself.
