Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

I was so excited to take psychology! I love learning about the mind, how it works, and why people act the way they act, or think the way they think. Before I took Intro to Psych, other students who had taken it before me told me that it was kind of boring. Honestly, I didn't take their feedback to heart. My expectations were still high. I learned soon that there was some truth to what they were saying. It was about the mind and how it works, but it wasn't very relate-able. I was expecting to learn why my brother feels the need to control his environment or why my friend gets insecure when you bring up her father. Instead, it was more about memorization. I had to memorize what part of the brain long term memory is stored, or what every drug is and what category they belong in. It's not that I'm not interested in those things, because I am. It was just so much information to memorize, that I almost don't feel like I processed a lot of it. There was so much memorization involved that our professor wasn't able to get through all the chapters. Everyday in class was slideshow after slideshow. It was difficult to stay engaged. So, if you're going to take Psychology 1301, get ready to memorize a lot of information, and study a lot for your tests.

    Course highlights:

I did learn a lot from reading the Psychology book on my own. Like I said before, because it was difficult to stay engaged during class, I studied my textbook on my own. My favorite chapter was ironically the memorization chapter. It was about how memory works and how it's stored. I also got to choose a topic for a paper. All the topics were mental disorders, and I chose Narcissistic Personality Disorder. I had to do a lot of research for that paper, and I loved it! I learned how it develops and why.

    Hours per week:

    3-5 hours

    Advice for students:

So, if you're going to take Psychology 1301, get ready to memorize a lot of information, and study a lot for your tests. Take notes! I cannot stress that enough. You should take notes in any class you take, but especially this class, because of the amount of information you have to retain. Even with the amount of studying I did, I still did not retain all the information I needed to retain for the tests, due to a lack of note taking. Also, your professor may give you information in class that you cannot find in your book. That happened to me many times. Participation also was very important to the professor specifically. I think it was to help others stay engaged.
