Information systems and technology is part of every field now. I feel every person needs to understand the basics of these fields, rather than just learning about other core subjects that only a select few will actually utilize in their lives. This is the future.
I think the biggest thing you get out of the course is understanding. You understand how and why technology works the way it does. You don't become a programming expert, but you could at least understand the basis of a code and be able to ask a programmer to accomplish what you need. There's a lot of satisfying achievements throughout the course.

I would advise people to practice. Only with practice can you really engrain the material. I would also recommend having an open mind, no matter what your field is.
