    This class was tough.

    Course Overview:

I would definitely recommend this course, especially to pre-med students. Dr. Savage has a great teaching style in which he explains WHY things happen rather than simply having you memorize reactions. This was extremely helpful in learning about o-Chem and even on the MCAT.

    Course highlights:

I learned how to think critically. To think and understand why things happen and to think critically about reactions. After taking this class, if I were given a reaction I had never seen before, I could strongly predict how the reaction would proceed.

    Hours per week:

    9-11 hours

    Advice for students:

I would advise student to do practice problems every day. O-Chem is challenging, but the more practice you do, the easier it becomes. Also, he does not give homework, so you have to give homework to yourself

    This class was tough.

    Course Overview:

Dr. Savage is a brilliant scientist and educator. His class is guided by student questions, which encourages students to be active and accountable in the learning process.

    Course highlights:

I loved the powerful feeling of being able to take random reactants and being able to predict the products. That's real chemistry!

    Hours per week:

    6-8 hours

    Advice for students:

The only way to learn reactions is by DOING them on paper-- over and over again!

    This class was tough.

    Course Overview:

This was a very interesting course. I liked the material, and we discussed a variety of things within the course. The professor taught in an engaging manner. The tests were hard, but the course was designed to help you succeed. In addition, the professor made specific efforts to ensure his course changed each year with developments in science and the needs of students.

    Course highlights:

I learned all the basic elements of organic chemistry in this course. I was able to gain a deeper understanding of molecular interactions and why things happen the way they happen in chemistry. It prepared me for several of the classes I am now taking.

    Hours per week:

    6-8 hours

    Advice for students:

Do the reading. Don't skip out on it, because it definitely helps you understand the class material better. Don't be afraid to ask for help, and go to all the recitation sessions you can. Go over your notes regularly, and focus on concepts and principles rather than specific examples.
