Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

This course was definitely a challenge, due to the fact that I have never liked chemistry. Being an introductory class, a lot of information was crammed into one semester. I was struggling a lot in the beginning, but my Professor played a roll in my perseverance to do well in class. Professor Lasseter was very understanding, motivating and supportive. Early on he noticed that I was struggling and he kindly referred me to the Captains Care program here at Christopher Newport University. This program helps students by providing them with a tutor for the specified subject. Tutors give one on one attention to ensure that the material is learned and understood. I personally had a session with a tutor who helped me understand my mistakes on the first exam of the semester, and I was better able to learn from my mistakes. As the semester carried on, I put in more effort to understand the material better. I continuously referred back to the textbook for guidance and continued to do practice problems. In the end, I finished the course with a better appreciation for Chemistry, and had a better sense of how to study more efficiently.

    Course highlights:

The main subjects highlighted in this course included elemental interaction, molecular forces, and basic topics of Chemistry. I was familiar with some of the material because of past classes, but I definitely needed to put in more effort to understand the new material.

    Hours per week:

    3-5 hours

    Advice for students:

Go to office hours!! Not only does this give you the opportunity to become familiar with your professor, but you will get advice from your professor that he/she will not give to the entire class. It also shows that you are motivated to do well in this class. I would also recommend reading the corresponding textbook chapter before the lecture. This allows you to have a sense of what you are about to learn, even if you do not fully understand the material on your own.

Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

Even though I struggled with chemistry Dr. quinlan was extremely helpful. He has office hours weekly and is wiling to help as long as you want it.

    Course highlights:

Dr. Quinlan was very good about illustrating certain topics that are hard to conceptualize. He also has class questions that are done anonymously so it takes the stress out of getting a question wrong in front of the class.

    Hours per week:

    3-5 hours

    Advice for students:

Definitely consider tutoring and go to office hours. Take the time out of your day to focus completely on the subject material.

    This class was tough.

    Course Overview:

Dr. Cole was a helpful and attentive professor. She provide many in class examples and made sure that she explained each topic throughly before moving on. Many professors say they have open office hours, but I really felt as though this was true for Dr. Cole. In addition to having open office hours, she always responded quickly to emails, was willing to stay longer after class to meet with individual students and she set two different weekly tutoring dates that were open as a resource to all students.

    Course highlights:

Although her class was very difficult I found myself working even more diligently than usual. Because of the effort she put in to make sure students got the most out of her class, I in turn wanted to not only familiarize myself with the material for the test, but truly grasp the concepts and engage in deeper thought. I really feel like I learned a lot in this class and look forward to applying the material in future science courses and my career.

    Hours per week:

    12+ hours

    Advice for students:

I recommend using Dr. Cole as a resource. I would not say that this class was easy, however it was worthwhile because of the commitment I put into it and the feeling of achievement that always followed.
