    This class was tough.

    Course Overview:

Dr. Spinney is a fantastic communicator of circumstances, and explaining how principled decision making is refracted through them. The course is not easy, but is well worth the effort.

    Course highlights:

Slavery as well as discussion of Manifest Destiny were some of the best class moments. Dr. Spinney leaves no stone unturned, making every student thoroughly reeexamine their perception of U.S. History.

    Hours per week:

    9-11 hours

    Advice for students:

Understand the textbook backward and forward. In class notes are unimportant for the exams. Know the For The Record readings. A basic outline of these will suffice. Take advantage of Dr. Spinney's office hours, he is more than willing to help students with whatever they are struggling with.

    This class was tough.

    Course Overview:

This class gives great insight into American history. The history text and lectures focus more on what caused the event in history instead of simply emphasizing dates and places. Lectures are often more like discussions than lectures with the professor attempting to engage the student as much as possible. For example, when learning about the Enlightenment, the professor gave us a checklist of ideas and asked us whether an idea was Christian or Enlightenment thinking. He would challenge your answer and make you think and double think what you said. Dr. Spinney's goal is to give you the story behind the story of history. Highly recommended!

    Course highlights:

The best parts of the courses were the lectures. Dr. Spinney gave detailed background information about the event and asked questions that made us examine our worldviews. Learning about the Puritans and the American Revolution were the most interesting points of the class. What I learned about the Puritans changed my view of them forever! I learned that the Puritans were not resentful, drab people, but were actually people passionate about liberty, God, and justice. The section on the American Revolution and how it was caused also changed my views. I was able to see that much of what I knew of the Revolution was actually false. For instance, I always supposed that the Americans were freedom-hungry and desperately wanted to get away from Britain as soon as possible. I learned that the sentiment for independence did not come about until around 1775! Excellent and interesting information.

    Hours per week:

    6-8 hours

    Advice for students:

For students considering this course, I would say to pay attention to the details. A seemingly insignificant fact (such as what was the North's chief export) could be, and often is, on the test. Be engaged in class as much as possible because this gives you a chance to examine your worldview and, by being involved, there is a much greater chance you'll be able to recall information. Study hard, do all the reading, be involved, and especially pay attention to the details!
