    This class was tough.

    Course Overview:

Diane is the head of the science division at Bellevue. She is a very thorough professor. Her class notes are sold at the library; I highly recommend purchasing those notes. The notes are detailed and extremely helpful, it will have all the information that you need to study for exams. She made me feel comfortable asking questions and coming to her office whenever I needed help or further explanations. Diane clearly puts a lot of effort into using different methods of teaching to adapt to her students different learning styles.

    Course highlights:

I really enjoyed microbiology and I feel like I retained a lot of the information I learned in that class. I now understand the difference of prokaryotic versus eukaryotic cells. I have a better understanding of how the human immune system works and the importance of vaccines to herd immunity. Although, what I thought was most impactful was learning about the dynamics of diseases, antibiotics and antibiotic resistance.

    Hours per week:

    12+ hours

    Advice for students:

Make sure you get Diane Mauldin’s microbiology notes. These not have all the information that she will cover in class, and give you a good study guide for your exams. Sit in the front of the class, and ask a lot of questions.

    This class was tough.

    Course Overview:

I learned a lot in this class, but I had to teach myself most of the material. Lectures were very disorganized.

    Course highlights:

Labs explained everything. I had to look for outside resources to make everything make sense.

    Hours per week:

    6-8 hours

    Advice for students:

You have to use more time out of class to learn the material than class time.

    This class was tough.

    Course Overview:

I would recommend Microbiology to anyone with an interest in diagnosing illnesses because though diseases may seem overwhelming to understand, it covers all the basics in an interactive way. Instead of saying, “I could never be a Doctor, and researching is boring”, you’ll leave class thinking, “I can make a difference and help the world.”

    Course highlights:

The highlights of this course were finding out that not all bacteria were bad and most were actually beneficial. I learned in this course that bacteria have safe zones, and only become detrimental to our health when they leave their given territory.

    Hours per week:

    12+ hours

    Advice for students:

It's not gross. Get involved during the laboratory tasks and bacterial tests. If you have a question, don't be afraid to ask. It's better to have them answered than to go never knowing for sure.
