Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

Dr. Barringer is a very thorough professor, but also very lenient. He is a plant ecologist, and therefore knows what he is talking about when it comes to plant biology. Overall the class has been very interesting and rigorous since there is a lot of new jargon within the coursework.

    Course highlights:

I learned (and still am learning) a lot about plants and their structures. My major is biology and I want to go into botany research when I am finished with college, so this course has been very helpful in leading me in that direction. This class has been and will be the foundation of my degree so I have been soaking it all up like a sponge.

    Hours per week:

    6-8 hours

    Advice for students:

Lots of studying! Make sure to do well in the lab part of the course while also maintaining lecture midterm grades.

Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

It is a very interesting course that teaches you a lot about not only plants, but fungi and algae. While it is somewhat challenging, the material is relatively easy to understand, it's just a lot of information to be able to remember for the tests, but it is definitely possible to get an A in the course as long as you study and do the assignments (I got an A and i took this in my first semester of college). I gained a great appreciation and understanding for plants, fungi and algae after this course, and learned that they do a lot for us, which is really important in understanding how humans interact with the rest of the world.

    Course highlights:

One thing that really stuck out to me was that flowers are a part of some plants' reproductive cycle, and that fruit is a result of that. Additionally, there are many things that we eat that we don't consider fruits, but they are in fact fruits, such as corn, wheat, and nuts. Literally anything that has a seed is a fruit. I also learned why some bacteria are harder to kill than others and how we can tell them apart by their Gram stain color, which is due to their wall's chemical make-up. If the sample stains positive, turning purple, it has a 1 part wall that only certain antibiotics will be able to fight. If the bacteria stains negative, it has a 2 part wall that will require other antibiotics. Sometimes bacteria can have a clear substance around it called a bio-film, and that bio-film makes it extremely difficult to kill the bacteria since it is a polysaccharide capsule that is very dense and sticky, making it very difficult for an external substance to penetrate that barrier.

    Advice for students:

It will become overwhelming sometimes, but it is well worth it and as long as you study a little bit each day, you will do absolutely fine. When a test is coming up, Dr. Bell will give you a review packet and nothing that's not on it will be on the test. He also has review sessions the night before each test. This does not mean that you can skip class, though, you need to attend everyday, and that's a promise. With that being said, he is a pretty cool professor and as long as you do what you are supposed to, you will learn a lot and actually have some fun with it.
