Not too easy. Not too difficult.
All residences come with their own pride, events, social council and pros/cons so really it's what you make of it. Suite-style is cheaper because there is no mandatory meal-plan, but you can get one separately from the university of just load up on flex dollars.
I'm not sure about too many student discounts, but you can definitely find a lot to choose from for not too much money all around downtown. Lots in walking distance, and tonnes more just a short trip on the public transit. There is so much of the City to explore! Mostly everything is pretty affordable.

Advice for students:
I love love love Real Thailand at Bloor/Spadina. Everyone seemed to like Spring Rolls, on Yonge, but I felt like it was hit or miss there depending on who was in the kitchen. Spadina is where the REAL Asian food and markets are, just be careful you don't order something crazy with eyeballs staring at you.
