Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

Intro to American Studies is the reason I chose AMST as a double-major!

    Course highlights:

Some of the highlights of this course were being able to read and write for a grade! I am talking about interesting books, where we were able to analyze the character in depth, and how their actions related to historical events going on in the United States.

    Hours per week:

    3-5 hours

    Advice for students:

Read your materials! Participate in class discussions regardless of class size.

Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

Many people go through high school thinking that history is boring. That's because most of the time it is. The way history is presented as rote memorization of names and dates gives no real value to the material beyond passing a test. This is not the case for American Studies. American Studies tells history through the experiences of people, not as tick marks on a timeline. There are no textbooks. These classes show the interpersonal workings of history and tells these stories in relation to contemporary themes. Intro to American Studies taught me so much about history that I had never heard of or considered.

    Course highlights:

Intro to American Studies gives an overview of American history from before European colonialism to present day. The course section I took focused on major themes throughout American history such as the Industrial Revolution, Slavery, Whiteness/Race, and Labor Histories by examining primary source documents.

    Hours per week:

    3-5 hours

    Advice for students:

Just do the reading. If you read, you will pass. I know for a lot of students reading is miserable. But the readings for this course (and all American Studies courses) is so interesting. You'll be glad you did it on a personal level.
