This class was tough.
This course forces the students to take an all-inclusive approach to understanding thermodynamics from a highly analytical perspective. Fundamental thermodynamic laws are derived in multiple different ways and with varying analogies that instill in the student a firm grasp of the underlying concepts. These are then applied to a huge variety of problems relevant to the real world of Chemical Engineering.
The highlight of this course is a design project at the end of the term. Here, your understanding of all the course concepts will culminate in a thorough analysis and design of a cyclic thermodynamic process. The project will also require you to make economic choices in conjunction with technical limitations to provide optimal design suggestions. You will, to a phenomenal extent, exercise your technical writing capabilities in the drafting of a full-length report (5-6 pages) with extensive appendices (10-20 pages including calculations and supplemental information).

Listen to Dr. Shell's recommendations on study habits and always get started on homework early. You will find the course challenging but extremely rewarding if you really take the time to put in the effort. Dr. Shell is an extremely intelligent and organized teacher who is more than willing to put in the extra effort to make sure you understand the concepts - don't be afraid to go to office hours!
