    Europe during the so-called dark ages, from 5th to 9th centuries was comprised of tribal groups with localized power. In Rome, the papacy was working hard to convert pagan tribes in order to assert authority of the church. Manuscript writing and illumination (hand decorated illustrations) flourished throughout this period especially in monastic workshops called scriptoria, a special room for copying and illustrating manuscripts usually attached to the monastery library. Manuscripts were often bound in elaborately worked metal and jeweled covers adding to their value and beauty. They were prized possessions that were placed on altars and carried in processions.
