Describe the development of the neural tube from the neural plate
Definition:
At the 3rd week of development, during the gastrulation period, cells moving in at the primitive pit go forward along the midline, to form a rodlike notochord which provides longitudinal support. This has an inductive relationship with overlying ectoderm. The neural plate is made up of neuroectoderm, which elongates and becomes slipper shaped. the lateral edges become raised up to form neural folds, and the depression in the midline is neural groove. When the folds approach each other and fuse, the neural tube is formed.
