When something moves back and forth, side to side, or up and down, we say it vibrates. When vibrations are carried through space and time it is a wave.

Why Materials Are Either Transparent or Opaque?

Materials that allow light to pass through (transmit light) are called transparent to light. Materials that absorb light without re-emitting it are called opaque. At lower frequencies, such as those of visible light, electrons in the glass are forced into vibration at a lesser amplitude. The atoms will retain the energy for a brief time, with less chance of collision with the neighboring atoms. The energy will spring from atom to atom. This means that less energy is transformed to heat, and instead the vibrating electrons are re-emitting that energy as light. Glass is transparent to light at visible frequencies, however, there is a slight time delay between absorption and re-emission.
