It is important to take the beginning of the course very seriously because everything else builds up on the basics and if you are unable to understand the beginning it is impossible to understand the rest

be ready to write somewhat comprehensive lab reports that basically test your knowledge on the class topics and just as the class topics build up on acquired knowledge, so do the lab reports.
