    This class was tough.

    Course Overview:

I would recommend this course to students in the sciences, because it is not only a fascinating course, but also because it forces you to develop good study habits. If you want to understand how you learn best, this is an excellent course to take as it will challenge you to learn the material; memorizing can only get you so far in this class.

    Course highlights:

This course gives you an understanding of how chemical reactions work on a molecular level. It really helps you develop visual-spatial skills.

    Hours per week:

    3-5 hours

    Advice for students:

Start with good study habits, and don't give up when it gets tough, because it will. If you start off by understanding the basics, it will be much easier to learn the more complicated material.

    This class was tough.

    Course Overview:

This class was the most difficult class I have taken so far. It required a lot of time and effort. His tests were also extremely difficult because he does not do partial credit.

    Course highlights:

How reactions worked and what reagent forms what product, cis and trans, and enantiomers.

    Hours per week:

    12+ hours

    Advice for students:

Make sure you have plenty of time to study for at least 1-2 hours a day. Do not wait until last minute to study. If possible, form study groups and work problems out together.

    This class was tough.

    Course Overview:

It is a required course for those seeking a chemistry or biology degree. This class challenged me in new ways and I felt very accomplished when I did well on tests.

    Course highlights:

In the classroom, I learned how to name organic compounds, read and write their reactions, and predict their products. In lab, I learned how to extract caffeine from tea bags, create TLC plates and compare which compounds with the UV cabinet, and distill ethanol.

    Hours per week:

    6-8 hours

    Advice for students:

It is a challenging course, but it is also very rewarding. Put in the time to learn the material well and you will do well in the course. Supplemental instruction is offered and I suggest going to that if you can. Dr. Bobylev wants his students to succeed and encourages you along the way. There are many people along the way who can help with the material. This course can feel hard because it is almost all new material.
