You get a top-notch professor, enthusiastic classmates, and a great optical lab with an awesome TA that you can easily relate to. Also, it provides some insight of all semiconductor optical devices starting from gas lasers, LED's, micron scale lasers, and fiber optics.

Advice for students:
Make sure to have a thorough background in EM(at least 3 courses, circuit theory courses don't count but useful), a course in semiconductor physics, and a course in either introductory photonic devices(junior level) or optical electronics(senior level). Always be on top of everything as there are weekly reports and no homework. Alas, don't take the course thinking it will be easy as it challenges you conceptually, as in you should be able to visualize the physics and obtain formulas(hence the background) It's a fun course though and it definitely prepares you in case you want to do research in this area.
