Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

If you talk to students, as well as read online, you'll find opinions of all sorts. Most are bad and he's known for being a "difficult" professor. I'm here to tell you the facts-- no sugar coating. Professor Kim has got to be one of the science best professors I've had while attending SJDC. He's prepared, lectures farewell executed and straight forward. He goes through multiple examples with you. What most fail to understand is that he WILL answer your questions. Put in the effort, do the practice exams bring him your questions and he will answer them on a conceptual and quantitative level. Bridging the two will help you go through the course a lot easier. He likes students who try and will reward you if you do. I stress this professor because you will actually LEARN fundamental concepts in chemistry. If your a science major, take his course (including 1B). His exams are not full of trick questions-- but they are difficult. But he equips you with the resources and knowledge to do them. Whenever I took an exam, there was never a question were I stopped because I didn't know HOW to approach it.... instead I always messed up on arithmetic. You can walk out of his course with a solid grade and be supplied with enough knowledge to succeed in the next course... or you can take an easy professor and in future courses struggle for future classes.

    Course highlights:

In Chem 1A your introduced into chemistry. atomic structure periodicity molecules, ions different types of chemical reactions atomic masses stoichiometry: finding the amounts of reactants versus products Intro to acids and bases gases intro to thermochemistry molecular orbital theory But I also learned how to critically think. I learned how to study. I learned how to approach chemistry problems.

    Hours per week:

    3-5 hours

    Advice for students:

Please, do yourself a favor and attend every lecture. Write as many notes as your can, and if possible record the lectures. Right after class hit the books and begin doing practice problems. When your done with those, request more from your professor. This is how I was successful in this course. I talked to him daily and did problems daily. Through this exposure, I was able to observe hints on what the exam would look like.

Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

I would definitely recommend this course to anyone because the professor made sure we (the students) understood the concepts through different strategies like mnemonic devices and funny phrases. Of course, studying and hard work is required however everything you learn will have an application to you whether with your area of study or just everyday life.

    Course highlights:

The highlight of this course would definitely be lewis structures and bonding because the professor would work out any compound that we had trouble figuring out. I will have minimal to no trouble with lewis structures from now on. Her out going personality definitely played a part in the overall experience of the class.

    Hours per week:

    12+ hours

    Advice for students:

Definitely make sure you manage your time to make time for studying. Studying for this class consist mainly of working out problems so the more you do the better you will do on the exams. There is also quizzes every week so it will consistently require you to review your notes and text.

    This class was tough.

    Course Overview:

it was a great course. learned a lot and met new people. was not an easy course, studied hard, but had fun.

    Course highlights:

Chem 1A is general chemistry, this means that you get a glimpse of what other types of chemistry is about. I loved learning about organic chemistry, it was the funnest part of the course.

    Hours per week:

    3-5 hours

    Advice for students:
