Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

I saw this course on the buzzfeed article for coolest classes at UCLA, and that article does not lie! Professor Phelan is an awesome professor; always entertaining and really knew what he was talking about. He has a story for everything and I never got bored listening to him lecture. The content is so relevant no matter what major you are. My TA, Avi, was also super chill and really concerned about the students.

    Course highlights:

When people ask me what this course is, I don't really know how to explain it other than it is a class about life. I loved it because everything about it was relevant to my life. I love learning about myself and how people work. The course covers everything from evolution to the nervous system to sexual desire to addiction. Sometimes it got a little too biological for me, as in some things were harder to grasp because I don't have a science background. All of the topics were very interesting and Dr Phelan made the topics feel relevant to his students, but also other animals, the world, etc.

    Hours per week:

    3-5 hours

    Advice for students:

The midterm and final are hard to study for. Go to office hours.

Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

This class was absolutely amazing. It doesn't matter if you have never enjoyed Biology before, you will enjoy this class. Dr. Phelan is an incredible lecturer. If you are prone to falling asleep in class, don't be worried--his jokes and clever anecdotes will keep you awake. He makes Biology an interesting subject, makes it applicable. I always think microscopes and petri dishes when I think of Biology, but he takes Darwin and makes him human before ever even approaching those theories of selection we know and love so well. This class is amazing because of Dr. Phelan and his teaching style, one hundred percent.

    Course highlights:

The highlight of this course were by far the lectures. He gives each lecture as if he's giving a Ted Talk (and he's given one before), and each class is not only informative, but also incredibly entertaining. Dr. Phelan also wrote both books used in this class and neither of them are anything like those dense science books we know so well. He uses a unique online platform to help student learning as well and this is incredibly helpful for exams. I learned how applicable plain ol' Biology can be, how relevant it is, and how it plays into our Psychology.

    Hours per week:

    3-5 hours

    Advice for students:

Always do the reading after lecture like he will tell you. Going to lecture before you do the reading shows you what to focus on, what you will be tested on. And, on that note, never miss lecture. Go to his office hours because he is an incredible man. And go to every single review session he has. He is beyond amazing.

Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

I'd recommend this course because the concepts are really fascinating and he's a great professor! Most people aren't science majors and the professor knows this, which is why he makes it so interesting and breaks the material down without "dumbing it down".

    Course highlights:

My favorite part of the class was the topic reciprocal altruism his thoughts on it and how he relates it to the world of the past and how evolution evolves it in the present are very interesting and I continue to think about the concepts even though I took the class last quarter.

    Hours per week:

    3-5 hours

    Advice for students:

Go to lecture! Although the class is podcasted, it's not the same as actually being there in person. For the readings you don't have to read through everything (only concepts discussed in lecture will be on the exam, however you must be able to explain further thus the reason for assigned readings), but read the text having to do with what Dr. Phelan mentioned from lecture. Also do all the discussion practice problem, one of those questions will be exactly the same as the quiz problem given each week in the discussion section!
