Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

This course is a great introduction to the more human side of linguistics, which is often taught from a very theoretical angle at UCSC. Jim McCloskey is a great professor with a very personal history with and insight into the course material. The coursework is engaging and very interesting, but overall not too difficult.

    Course highlights:

I learned a lot about how linked language is to people's sense of identity, both individually and corporately. I still remember a fascinating instance when the professor played audio clips from radio interviews done in the UK and asked us which sounded like English and which did not, and him saying at the end that any one of the speakers would probably be deeply offended if we suggested their speech didn't sound like English to them (they had thick accents and dialects).

    Hours per week:

    3-5 hours

    Advice for students:

Ask questions, attend the discussion section, participate actively in class because Prof. McCloskey encourages that (even though it was a huge lecture class when I took it) and it will make class way more lively and interesting.

Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

Best professor I have had in terms of clarity and just overall making a complicated subject not only digestible, but also very interesting.

    Course highlights:

Jim can be awesome. His office hours are pretty crowded, so be there early. If you are planning to take a class with him, expect to see some hopping

    Hours per week:

    6-8 hours

    Advice for students:

Read the material, and go to his lectures, and you should do well
