    Course Overview:

    The course consisted mostly of taking notes quizzes and test. Which is not always fun, but it teaches you what you need to know and even a little more.

    Course highlights:

    This course really digs deep into problems the United States has overcome from the start. You really notice how far the country has come.

    Course Overview:

    Mr. Ornstein did an amazing job at getting students to use collaborative learning. He made us think creatively when talking and writing. He showed us the little nooks and crannies that various accounts of history like to hide in. He never took a stance and always made people choose and defend their position. But sometimes he would have students do the opposite. They'd choose whichever side they supported and then they had to come up with reasons why the other side was right. The class wasn't focused on him throwing information at the students and them being able to regurgitate it like they were reading from a textbook. It was focused on how to transform a topic and talk about a topic in more than just facts. Everything in history can be turned into an argumentative essay, you only have to look. But you always have to remember that opinions are never fact and facts are necessary to make a point.

    Course highlights:

    I learned Columbus Day is highly controversial due to his initial comments when he didn't actually come to North America. I learned that everything around us connects to a million other topics, even if we can't see it. The Miyans and their math system being the reason our hours run on scales of 12 and 60 instead of the Roman and Greek system of 10 and 100. That the industrial revolution could've never happened if it weren't due to key events and key people in history, yet there are always people that were walked on when others made their way to the top. I learned that the Boston Massacre was propaganda in it's best form and that it achieved it's goal of essentially becoming a war cry. I learned that the Civil War can never be attributed to just one factor and that every time you analyze the past, you can't do so from you're own perspective.I discovered that FDR's New Deal was simultaneously the worst and best piece of legislation for the US during the depression. I learned that there are at least two viewpoints to everything that happened in history and that the truth is always in the gray mess between accounts. Mr. Ornstein taught me all that. He taught me to go beneath the surface and actually look at what was and had happened in the world around me.

    Advice for students:

    Do the work and pay attention. Ornstein jokes around and likes to have fun with the students because he's trying to keep them engaged. He tells extremely weird life stories, but if you actually listen to those stories, he can relate every single one back to the topic at hand. And never forget that there's two sides to everything and you're never wrong, but you're never right either.
