    | Would highly recommend.

    This class was tough.

    Course Overview:

I would recommend it, as the course, while hard, is extremely interesting, as it examines chemistry more in depth. The teacher of it at Dobson High, Mr. Raymond Hayes, knows what he is doing and prepares students for the AP Exam in an efficient and thorough manner, without it feeling like he is teaching to the test.

    Course highlights:

I gained better lab skills, study skills and learned how to really buckle down during this year long (the course length above did not give me the option to list it as a year long course, but it is). One of the highlights was making aspirin as a lab. Another highlight was towards the end of the year, when we had a lively argument with the teacher over whether or not a certain substance, when dissolved in water, would make an acidic solution, neutral solution or a basic solution. According to Mr. Hayes, in theory it was a different answer than what many of us had put on our tests. Each side had a valid reason for their answer, and so Mr. Hayes, since he had all of the materials, allowed us to conduct the experiment. We had the opportunity to actually conduct the experiment in class and we were right! It is a class that is high enough to where you can actually start to test things, to compare theory with practice.

    Hours per week:

    9-11 hours

    Advice for students:

If you do not love chemistry, or did not get a B+ in CP Chem, it will be a hard course until you can adapt. If you love chemistry, or got higher than a B+ in CP Chem, it will still be hard, but it is easier to adapt and makes learning a bit easier. Taking CP Chem is a course requirement.
