    This class was tough.

    Course Overview:

I absolutely love Roelen. He brings so much more than just literature into the class, adding all kinds of new understanding and layers to the learning process of the course. The books he chooses to show the class are also very interesting and usually very relevant to the times. He takes your boredom into consideration. He's also hilariously sarcastic and very easy to learn from. You have to have a bit of a tough skin in order to be okay with his humor, but he's super fun.

    Course highlights:

He loves to bring psychology into the lessons, which really helps you learn in general and learn the course.

    Hours per week:

    0-2 hours

    Advice for students:

Be ready to do a lot of reading and in class essays!

Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

I reccomend this class to everyone because it isn't the most challenging class, and yet I learned the most in this class! Not to mention, Mr. Roelen is the best teacher ever. I now know how to clearly express my points in an essay, how to analyze a poem, and how to annotate pieces of literature; all things I would have never been able to accomplish if I didn't challenge myself and transfer into an AP level English class.

    Course highlights:

Some of the most important things that I learned from this class include writing a well articulated essay, analyze poems and other pieces of literature, and discover forshadowing hints by looking at archetypes.

    Hours per week:

    3-5 hours

    Advice for students:

If you feel like you aren't being challenged in your regular English class, I highly recommend transferring into AP. Also, don't sparknote the books, they are actually interesting and will be very beneficial to you.

Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

I would recommend this course due to how the literature we study often directly challenges our own perception of the world- a very important thing to understand and accept as a high schooler.

    Course highlights:

So far my favorite read has been either David Foster Wallace's "This is Water" Graduation Speech or reading "Equus" by Peter Shaffer as part of the class' book club activity. Both works have led me to reevaluate how I see the world and perceive others.

    Hours per week:

    3-5 hours

    Advice for students:

Listen to your teacher, as they will often have more engaging knowledge than the text.
