    Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

    Why I recommend this course is because as a high school senior, taking a college class that focused on the society and world we live in only pushed me a closer to being successful in life. The course wasn't difficult, however, the readings that were mandatory pushed me harder to be more attentive and more focused on the documents that talked a lot about the real world issues of growing up an African American or apart of a minority group.

    Course highlights:

    Throughout the course, we read many personal narratives, articles, and journal entries about the world we live in. From Jim Crow Laws to mass incarceration to the War on Drugs, we gained a different insight on the government and the corrupt citizens of the United States. For an example, we read “The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness” by Michelle Alexander. The first chapter, the Rebirth of Caste, describes how history seems to repeat itself in different shapes and forms. During the mid-late 1800s to mid-late 1900s, Jim Crow was a racial caste system that was effective heavily. It was segregation laws that deprived the civil liberties of not only African Americans, but also any race that wasn’t white. It made sure the Caucasian race was a superior one, oppressing the races that fell under its tyrannical rule. During this time period, African Americans weren’t allowed to vote, also known as disenfranchisement. In her book, Alexander discusses how Jim Crow still exists today but in a different way than what it was years ago. She opens the chapter by saying even when African American slaves were free to walk, we were not actually free to walk. Society has it ways to make sure we return to the immoral lifestyle of slavery without actually going back to slavery. Even though African Americans today have received great success throughout the years, that doesn’t mean we should overlook the racial caste system that still exists subconsciously.

    Advice for students:

    What you need to do to succeed in this course is to communicate with your professor if you didn't understand something in class. There are many resources that are available for you. Don't be afraid to speak up in class or to ask questions. Make sure you are understanding the content 100% thoroughly. Do not procrastinate. If you were assigned a major paper to write and the due date is in a month, make sure you are cracking down on that assignment! Doesn't matter if it's "too early" to do the assignment, time will sneak away from you and all you will have left is little time to properly research and type your paper. Your professor will know when you rush a paper or put little to no thought in it. Do not plagiarize. It belittles your thinking and you will get caught. Professors will know if your paper has content in it that was plagiarized. It's easier to come up with your original ideas and thoughts instead of searching on the internet to cheat.
