    Course Overview:

    It was a required class, since we need 4 years of English to graduate, but with my teacher it was my most fun English class so far. We seemed to be always having to write essays and do reading inventories, which was a bit annoying, but in our class discussions it was nice that we were able to go really in depth about things like the author's message. We also did some things that were more fun like improvisatiom games and getting roles to read in The Tempest. The class was EBR, which with all classes could be a good or bad thing, but it may have helped us in this case get better grades.

    Course highlights:

    The highlights of the class were Mr. Fritz's jokes in general, which he constantly wove into each day. For example, after we had read Of Mice and Men he asked us why George shot Lennie, and one of the options was “He missed, he was aiming for you.”, among other equally ridiculous answers. Before reading The Tempest we spent a day or two on improvisation games, and then were assigned roles to read the play as realistically as possible to work through it together. One of the other more fun assignments was a court case about students that ended up getting hurt when left alone in a classroom. I learned mostly how to write a more sophisticated essay that flows logically and goes more in depth, and especially how to write better with limited time. The class also enhanced my reading skills, mostly since we had to read A Tale of Two Cities.

    Advice for students:

    I would always try to do the reading on time to get the most out of class discussions, and make sure to take notes on the discussions. What we discussed was always a major part of my essays, and made my writing much more in depth. I would prepare for the essays, mostly by organizing class notes, your own ideas, and finding quotes from the book to make it easier to finish on time. It was also really important for Mr. Fritz's class that you start with a claim in the essays, instead of thinking as you write and concluding with a claim, which you can avoid my planning it out in advance.
