    This class was tough.

    Course Overview:

English can be boring. But Ms. Gorence brought it to life. I have never been more invested in books I have found dreadful. I found "Wuthering Heights" tedious. But the discussions we had in class were fantastic, and I would read that book over and over again if it meant I get to have a debate of the same caliber. I learned more in her class about literary analysis and my writing skills than I have about anything else in four years of high school.

    Course highlights:

The highlights of this course have to be the timed essays. We did quite a few timed essays, and I found myself learning how to break apart a piece of literature and analyze what motivated the author, what symbolized something, and the underlying meanings to many seemingly arbitrary things.

    Hours per week:

    6-8 hours

    Advice for students:

Be prepared to do the work. The payoff is stupendous, but the road getting there is tough. Be prepared to write many essays, to do in-depth research on poetry, and read some tough books.

Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

Mr. Hemrick is an amazing teacher. At times, he may seem disinterested but he is not! He knows what he is talking about and genuinely cares for each student.

    Course highlights:

I learned a lot about putting my own emotion into my writing. It is nice when you can write this really technical essay and do everything perfect, but if it doesn't carry your own emotion or thought, it just isn't a perfect paper.

    Hours per week:

    3-5 hours

    Advice for students:

Don't slack on the essays! They aren't difficult but they require more than a few hours the night before to write an effective essay.
