Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

Dr. Shaffer is an excellent teacher, he explains everything very thoroughly and tries his best to help all his students understand. He believes heavily in active learning which may not be the best for people who tend to work better alone. He encourages group work and figuring problems out with classmates.

    Course highlights:

The pre-class assignments were very helpful and gave a preview of the lecture. His lectures were thorough and included diagrams to help explain his lecture better. In high school I took AP Bio and all the material is basically the same. This course is not challenging, but you have to keep up with the readings and homework.

    Hours per week:

    9-11 hours

    Advice for students:

Do the pre-class assignments and the reading and also go to his office hours and be active in discussions.

Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

Dr. Shaffer is an incredible professor with an eye for what is relevant. He not only teaches the information, but allows us to apply what we learned in a larger setting.

    Course highlights:

His Powerpoints, which contain scenarios where the teaching can be applied, may not be the best resource to study for tests the night before, HOWEVER, they are proven to teach the information in class more effectively than plain Powerpoints with bullet points and paragraphs of just information.

    Hours per week:

    6-8 hours

    Advice for students:

Go to his lectures. Trust me, you're better off attending instead of ditching to teach yourself.

    This class was tough.

    Course Overview:

I'd recommend this course because the learning environment is very active and lively. Though it's a lot of work, Schaffer does a great job in explaining the course in a more in depth way that isn't just basic information. He really goes in depth, and analyzes it in a different way. A new way of learning for me at least.

    Course highlights:

I enjoyed the in lecture in interaction between the professor and students. I learned a lot about DNA and organisms and since it was a first college course I learned new study habits from it as well.

    Hours per week:

    6-8 hours

    Advice for students:

Schaffer usually assigns a good amount of work which includes online + chapter readings, though beneficial as long as you keep up with the work.
