Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

The VAC is extremely dear to my heart for many reasons. First of all, it has a sense of community and a studio environment that is invaluable for getting through the hustle and bustle of High School. Ms. Harris and Ms. Walsh genuinely care about and get to know every student, and even though they are technically art teachers, they become mentors through the college and scholarship process. You have a kind of independence and freedom that other courses do not offer, and for me, this feels like one of the most honest and real classes in my school. You are there for the art and for the learning, not for an AP credit, a requirement, or recommendation letter.

    Course highlights:

Being in the VAC taught me how to handle my materials creatively, because there is a limited supply. I learned how to paint through experience, and I learned the language of Art critique that is common in later academia. I also learned how to have a closer relationship to my work, and to independently put in effort to make it the best it could be.

    Hours per week:

    3-5 hours

    Advice for students:

All you need to succeed in the VAC is to truly care about your work. Engage with the teachers, with others, and put effort into your art-- your grades will never falter if you do that. Do not apply to the VAC if you don't care about your work.

Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

I would highly recommend this because the teachers prompt you to explore different media, techniques, artists, all the while living in a big happy dysfunctional family.

    Course highlights:

I learned how to work with different media that I've never used before such as charcoal, ink, oil pastel, etc. I also learned how to work on a "charged surface" and worked with different objects like cardboard.

    Hours per week:

    6-8 hours

    Advice for students:

Just create the artwork that was instilled in you.
