Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

The class taught me how to reason out deeper meanings through pattern recognition. The progress I made in my writing, in terms of syntax and content, was unparalleled. I can say that this is the class that made me the writer I am today.

    Course highlights:

My favorite parts of the course included the discussions and the blogs. The discussions were time periods in the class that were allotted to discuss text and the meaning that we took out of them. Ms Valentino would then tell us if our thinking was on the right track or not. Blogs furthered my ability to find meaning because it let me write about any text and any life experience I wanted to. This helped my mind wander and helped to increase my pattern recognition.

    Hours per week:

    6-8 hours

    Advice for students:

I advise you to take this course if and only if you are ready to put in the work needed to succeed. We read a plethora of books and short essays and the work adds up if not done immediately. We also write a lot, so be ready to open your mind. AP English Language isn't a class that can simply be studied. It is peremptory for you to learn to find meaning, and that can only be done by letting your mind wander once in a while.

Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

The class was very informative, although it could be dry at times.

    Course highlights:

This class, along with the following semester, definitely prepared me for the AP test (I got a 5.) There was an enormous focus on essay writing, along with a smaller concentration on the history of literature vs the literature itself. The course is designed around American lit only, which made some of the earlier stuff dryer in content, but overall the coursework was interesting enough. Dr Steltenkamp heavily promoted intra-class discussion without forcing rigid seminars, which was one of my favorite aspects of the class.

    Hours per week:

    3-5 hours

    Advice for students:

Study for the final. I repeat, study for the final. If you're considering whether or not to take this course, consider this: Can* you handle writing (at the pinnacle of the semester) an in-class essay a week? If not, then maybe think twice about committing to this course. *Note that I said "can you," and not "do you want to." This is because I truly believe that if you are capable, this class is very enriching. I, like the majority of the other students, did have times when I complained about the writing, but in the end, it was definitely worth it.
