This class was tough.
This is the first course where I was able to combine many other previous courses to thoroughly solve engineering analyses of various machines. Each part of a machine must be analyzed to solve for factors of safety to see when, where, and how they will eventually fail (and they all do!). This was the best course I have taken thus far in that I really felt like a mechanical engineer. I can now design a system and know exactly how it will operate under given conditions. That is a cool thing to be able to say.
The highlights were many. This is a highly analytical course so be prepared! An average homework was one problem and took about 8 pages of handwritten work to design. To me, that is the epitome of engineering so I highly enjoyed that aspect of the course. The analyses are especially difficult, but they do require time and confidence in that you have to be able to assume certain design specifications and moreover know WHY you can assume them.

Advice for students:
Be prepared to burn the midnight oil on this class. You should start off strong because the first part is easier and it helps you to ease into the longer, harder design problems later on. It takes some getting used to, but after a few assignments you should be able to write a 10 page report on a design with ease, and hopefully enjoy it! Also, READ THE BOOK AND KNOW THE TABLES. You will have to use a lot of tables to design something, so read the book and find out what each table can tell you!
