Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

If you are a science whiz, enjoy a bit of math, and are intrigued by the idea of creating/observing chemicals reacting through mixture, chemistry is a course for you! Mrs. Hepner is a wonderful instructor of this course at Selinsgrove High School. She is fun, enthusiastic, passionate, and is always willing to help students struggling to comprehend the course material. Chemistry is also a class that should be strongly considered by anyone aspiring to go into pre-nursing or pre-med status upon high school graduation. The reason being is because Chemistry is nearly always a prerequisite within the collegiate medical programs, and is often required for admission to the program on a high school transcript.

    Course highlights:

I gained knowledge specifically on the elements on the periodic table. I performed extremely interesting experiments involving chemical compounds/reactions. I learned the basic Chemistry terminology required to be fluent within the course (i.e. reactant, solvent, compound, mixture, etc.). I also learned the names/proper usage of basic forms of equipment used within a Chemistry classroom (i.e. beaker, test tube, flask, bunsen burner, pipette, etc.).

    Hours per week:

    6-8 hours

    Advice for students:

The best advice I can give for Chemistry and really any course of study in general is to not be afraid to ask questions. I found chemistry to be one of the more strenuous classes throughout my high school career. It requires great attention to detail, work ethic, discipline, and the fearlessness to ask your teacher questions when you are struggling to comprehend concepts within the course. Teachers get paid for a reason. They are there to teach you the information, but it is the job of the student to do his/her best to process the information and ASK QUESTIONS when necessary. The teacher unfortunately has no way of determining a student's lack of understanding of a certain concept unless a question is asked. Chemistry is not an easy course by any stretch, but it is absolutely doable with focus, persistence and drive, just like anything else worth accomplishing in this life.
