Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

It is a fun and creative class where you discover you can do things you never thought you could. The class forces you to think outside the box and sometimes leave your comfort zone. This class was all about the conceptual meaning behind art, so it forces you to really think about what, and more importantly why, you are making. This class is not about artistic ability, so anybody can do well in it and engage in creative projects they otherwise might have never done. In the end, you can end up with some interesting, and unexpected artwork.

    Course highlights:

This course is divided into tree main projects: a mixtape, parade float, and the 1000 art piece. For the mixtape you had to pick a theme, it could be anything, and make a playlist of songs that exemplify that theme. This was by far the most difficult project for me, because each song had to have meaning that tied back to the central theme. You have to be able to explain your theme, why you picked each song, and why you played them in that particular order. Thus, it was important to have a good and conceptually developed theme to tie the project together and that was difficult. The next project was to create a float that will the used in a class parade around the school. It was a team project, so it really teaches you the importance of communication, teamwork, and time management. Again, it was all about the concept. You need to be able to explain why you built that character for your float and all of its details. Lastly, the 1000 project. For this final assignment you have to create an art work using 1000 of an object. For example, one person used 1000 nails, another used 1000 tea bags, 1000 pencils, leaves, matches, bottles, the possibilities were endless. It was hard deciding what to use because I didn't know what to make and I wanted to use something inexpensive. This is where it really forces you to think outside the box. Some people decided to be more conceptual and made videos containing a thousand seconds, while others took it more literally and made a physical object like a bug made out of 1000 leaves. Overall, this class teaches you to plan and execute the ideas in our heads.

    Hours per week:

    6-8 hours

    Advice for students:

Definitely put a lot of thought into your projects, for this class, the meaning was always important. Also, don't worry about the level of artistic ability you have, this class is for anybody and anybody can succeed in it as long as you put in effort.
