Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

This course was both an excellent starting point for students with little or no background in writing fiction and those with more developed experience . While it pushes students to write regularly, it also forces them to simply examine the world with a keener eye. It was a great workshop atmosphere, as students at a variety of levels were pushed to provide constructive criticism.

    Course highlights:

Although I came into the course with some experience writing fiction, this class solidified my existing knowledge. We delved in to the mechanics of what makes up a good story, and how to control and use every available element in writing, from imagery and syntax to character development and plot.

    Hours per week:

    6-8 hours

    Advice for students:

As long as you do the assigned reading and writing, this course is not that difficult to pass. However, the more you put into the class, the more you will get out. While it is possible to skim by, this class is a great opportunity to expand your writing skills no matter where your skill level is at.

Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

I thoroughly enjoyed this course because afterwards you have a basic understanding of the art and craft of poetry. This course taught me the real power of language both written and spoken and how it can be strengthened using specific techniques and literary devices.

    Course highlights:

I am not a big fan of group workshop or group projects. However, this course uses small group workshops with clear objectives, and in these groups you receive excellent feedback on your work. After every group workshop, I was always able to improve and revise a poem or start a completely new one. Ideas from other people often help me cultivate my own.

    Hours per week:

    6-8 hours

    Advice for students:

Do all of the required readings and annotations. A lot of the assigned readings are meant to help you in your own work and you can learn a lot from them. Also do not wait until the last minute to start thinking of ideas for a poem, they will not turn out great and the professor will notice.
