Always Do the Reading
Great Intro to the Subject
Not too easy. Not too difficult.
Although (sometimes) difficult, it is very insightful. I've always had in interest in seeing how language and communication works, so I enjoyed it.
There is more to linguistics than phonology and phonetics (which are actually not the same thing--go figure). I can now teach my Japanese friends and future students how to pronounce English L and R sounds.

Read the textbook. Read it. Read it again. Then read it again. If you still don't understand, ask the professor...then read it again.
