Great Intro to the Subject
Not too easy. Not too difficult.
I would recommend this course for any and all students interested in taking English courses at Smith. The class offers more complexity than Eng118 courses but still works as a preface to the major. Andrea Stone is an intelligent and reliable professor who never missed a class nor the opportunity to explore the literature on the syllabus. Manageable course load, and rewarding experience.
The highlights of the course definitely came from the size of the course. The class sizes at Smith are typically on the smaller side, and this makes literature classes very rewarding, Eng199 was not an exception. The size of the class allowed for plenty of ongoing conversations about the literature, as well as direct conversations with the professor.

Advice for students:
This class will require some time outside of the classroom. There are books to be read, and papers to be written. Unlike some other courses, Professor Stone doesn't have an unreasonable expectation of you. It being an Eng199 class, she has high standards, but also takes the time to teach about how to be a better writer, and what we need to know about academic writing. She has a baseline expectation but also understands that the level of the class warrants some instruction.
