    This class was tough.

    Course Overview:

This course offers doctoral student a foundation in the level of scholarly research necessary for completion of dissertation.

    Course highlights:

Among the highlights of this course has been learning how to synthesize research literature at the level required and expect for pursuit of a doctoral degree. Additionally, this course significantly improved my critical thinking and evaluation of scholarly literature. I learn how to effectively discern the value of scholarly literature. This include evaluating the extent of an articles literature review, the methodology used for gathering and evaluating data. This insight prompt consideration whether more effective or appropriate methods and data analysis methods could have or even should have been used. Also, I learn to evaluate and to determine if all parts of the study match up, e.g. does the discussion and conclusion jibe with the data analysis and does all the foregoing jibe with the literature review.

    Hours per week:

    3-5 hours

    Advice for students:

I would strongly advise any student considering this course to utilize a computer base note taking program, i.e. endnotes. This will allow for organized retrieval of studies or other course information read. Also, the use of endnotes assist in writing of literature reviews, a requirement for the course, and allows for easy comparison and contrast of research articles. Lastly, I would recommend that a student considering this course learn learn mapping and utilize a computer based mapping program, e.g. c,maps. Both, learning mapping and utilizing a computer based mapping program facilitates organization and structure of written literature reviews.
