Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

Computer science and its applications is an informative and applicable course to match daily operations. I believe every student should take a computer science course in college because society is advancing technologically toward an era where computer systems will replace obsolete materials. For instance, books are now available and demanded on computers, mobile devices, kindles, tablets, and more. In addition, the manufacturing industry is replacing jobs with computer systems that help businesses cut down on production costs and move toward a more efficient economy. Therefore, every student should be equipped with basic knowledge on computer systems and the evolution of technology as it is a demanded skill in the workforce. After taking this course, I decided to computer science and information systems my minor at Northeastern.

    Course highlights:

There are many highlights of this course; the most important was learning how to build spreadsheets and conduct effective data analysis using Microsoft Excel and Access. Before beginning this course, I thought I had a fundamental understanding of Microsoft Excel and Access, however, I was amazed to find that each program is much more idiosyncratic than I anticipated. I learned essentially every function and how to organize data using these functions. I also used my new knowledge to organize data in my other courses which boosted my productivity and deepened my understanding of Excel and Access.

    Hours per week:

    12+ hours

    Advice for students:

Put the time into fully understanding the content!! It is easy to skip over the example problems and head right for the graded assignments, but if you do so, you will not be able to apply the functions to problems outside of this course which defeats the purpose of taking computer science. In addition, use your resources. The instructors and teaching assistants at Northeastern set aside hours to help students grasp the content and practice examples. Other resources include online videos and articles with instruction, peer tutors, and your peers themselves. Forming a study group is a method to ensure your understanding of the material, and an opportunity to network and make new friends. Finally, make sure you understand the topic quiz answers because each of the major exams contains a few of the questions from the topic quizzes.
