Instantaneous Rate of Change
Review: Average rate of change can be calculated using the slope of a secant drawn
between two points on a curve.
The rate of change at a single
point is called the instantaneous rate of
change. The instantaneous rate of

Introduction to Calculus
Calculus is built on two major ideas.
The rst is differential calculus, which is
concerned with the instantaneous rate of
change. This can be illustrated by the slope of
a tangent to a functions graph.
The Product Rule
From the lesson on the Power Rule, we know that if two functions are added or
subtracted, we can just add or subtract their derivatives.
Example
f(x) = 2x2 g(x) = 3x
F(x) = 4x g(x) = 3
3! (f(x) i g(x) = f(X) i g(X)
X
g(zxzi 3x)=4xi3
