Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

Prof. Boin was so enthusiastic and encouraging. He pushed you really hard, but it was for a reason. I learned a lot in this class that I am already seeing in my everyday life. It's really cool to be able to say "Hey! I know who Augustus is, AND I know what he did!!". I would highly recommend his course.

    Course highlights:

It was not a regurgitation of facts and dates; Boin made you think! I also just feel that the course material was interesting in and of itself.

    Hours per week:

    3-5 hours

    Advice for students:

DO THE READINGS! They aren't as boring as you might expect. Also, make sure you really understand the themes he discusses.

    This class was tough.

    Course Overview:

I would recommend this course wholeheartedly. I am aware that several people in my class have a differing opinion due to the heavy workload. However, I got a lot out of the assigned readings, despite how much time it took out of my day.

    Course highlights:

I gained a lot of historical knowledge in this course. I have a greater understanding of how to read and interpret pre-modern history and how people back then thought. In addition to this, I would make a killing in Jeopardy if there were questions about Greeks, Romans and Byzantines from their antiquity to end. In addition to this, the teacher really enjoys the material and I was never bored during class.

    Hours per week:

    3-5 hours

    Advice for students:

I would advise that students taking this course would take super detailed notes, as Joe Western does not post his powerpoints or reviews online. In addition to this, he uses his lectures for test questions, especially short answer questions. I would recommend using a laptop, as you can write more in a short amount of time.
