    This class was tough.

    Course Overview:

This was an incredible course. I took it twice because I failed it the first time, but I got an A the second time around. There are hours of readings due for every class (the class meets three times a week), and they require your undivided attention--this is not the time to listen to music or have the TV on in the background. I made the mistake the first time I took the course of only focusing on the readings. They are important, but the lectures supplement the readings and are essential to doing well on the exams. This course is 3 midterms and 1 final exam, all of which are open-ended questions and quote-matching/significance. Listening to Professor Hall (sometimes even twice by re-listening to lectures) is crucial.

    Course highlights:

Professor Hall was the highlight. He is inspiring, passionate, funny, articulate, and one of the best professors I've ever had. I learned more about myself than anything else, as this was the first time I failed a course. But academically, I learned about the most important sociologists and got a bit of history related to the French Revolution in there too!

    Hours per week:

    9-11 hours

    Advice for students:

Read the text but rely mostly on the lectures. The conferences give the majority of the answers for the midterm exams. The final will be mostly about comparing sociologists and you can bring in your own opinion.
