Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

The basics of theory is the most important knowledge for a music educator.

    Course highlights:

You start from the beginning and work your way into more difficult aspects but are still tested and reminded of the very basic information. I learned that there is a little more to theory than meets the eye.

    Hours per week:

    3-5 hours

    Advice for students:

Go to class, pay attention in class. And do all of the homework he assigns. It will get harder but the quicker you learn the basics the easier it will become later on.

Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

Dr. Houchins is very knowledgeable and makes understanding music theory much easier than I thought when I began the course. I had very little background in music theory, but now am confident in further classes as a result of Dr. Houchins' teaching.

    Course highlights:

Fun with chalk! We learned basic chords and voice leading which allows me to begin composition. We also learned how to read in different clefs so we can read and analyze all types of music.

    Hours per week:

    3-5 hours

    Advice for students:

Be ready to learn when you get to class. It can seem daunting at first, but if you come to class prepared and ready to learn, you will walk out at the end of the semester ready for the next.

    This class was tough.

    Course Overview:

I would have to recommend taking this course to all incoming music students. This course provides the basic building blocks to understanding how music works. You will learn different how scales work time signatures different clefs and etc.

    Course highlights:

I will not say that this course was my favorite by any means, but I did learn more information on how music is made and what to do/not do when creating music especially if it is to be analyzed by the teacher.

    Hours per week:

    9-11 hours

    Advice for students:

To succeed in this class it is crucial that you, the student try and read as much information in the book provided as possible along with asking the teacher multiple questions as to why/how something works. it would also be a good idea to collaborate with friends in the class or upperclassmen who have already taken these courses as they may also have more helpful tips, that saved me a lot of trouble as well. It may seem hard, but once you can have an understanding of what's going on you will be able to easily pass this course along with the others afterwards.
